Who Are We?

The Friends Of The Whyalla Conservation Park are a group of volunteers who offer their time, effort and skills to help to look after the Whyalla Conservation Park .

The Friends Of The Whyalla Conservation Park are just one of over one hundred Friends of Parks groups spread over South Australia. Our group was formed in 1987, after the Park was almost closed due to excessive vandalism. It has won many awards since then, including Friends Group of the Year, Friends Group of the Decade, and three of our members have been named as South Australia's Friends of Parks Volunteer of the Year.

You don't have to have specialist knowledge to join our group. We have members who are teachers, nurses, carpenters, pharmacists, accountants, lecturers, homemakers, pastoralists, council officers, retirees and many more! What we do have in common is an appreciation for Whyalla's natural surroundings and a ever-present desire to learn more about them.

What Do We Do?

The Friends, in conjunction with the Park Ranger, are involved in controlling pest animals and plants, maintaining facilities, removing rubbish, regular park checks and revegetation activities. We raise our own funds to provide facilities in the Park.

The Friends meet at least once a month, including hands-on working bees. General meetings usually have a guest speaker to talk on a subject of interest to the group. Members receive a monthly newsletter, "The Myall Post". Our Friends are all good friends as well, and meet regularly for social events.
